On Monday, the Internet exploded with rumors after Canadian singer PartyNextDoor shared a picture allegedly showing his former flame, R&B artist Kehlani, in his bed.

While it’s no telling when the picture was actually taken, many people assumed the pair were back together and accused Kehlani of cheating on her most recent boo, NBA player Kyrie Irving.

Major news publications like USA Today even covered the story, and of course, social media blew up with speculation about what was happening in the very public, very messy love triangle.

As things unfolded, many folks were quick to laugh off the situation, or slam the singer for being a “ho,” but all that changed on Tuesday, after Kehlani revealed she tried to take her own life.

“Today I wanted to leave this earth,” she wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post. “Being completely selfish for once. Never thought I’d get to such a low point.”

Kehlani then went on to explain that the blogs and social media accusation were wrong because “no one was cheated on, and [I’m] not a bad person.”

Following her suicide attempt, the 20-year-old was reportedly placed on a psychiatric hold and is currently recovering. But the lesson remains: social media is not all fun and games.

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the jokes and drama, but there are real people with real emotions behind the social media posts. And while Party Next Door was definitely an asshole for putting Kehlani on blast in the first place (especially since he knew about her struggles with depression), the blogs and reputable publications who stoked the cheating rumors didn’t help either.

Before she left Instagram, Kehlani wrote that she’s “not in heaven right now for a reason.” Perhaps her life was spared to teach us all to be a little more gentle with each other.
