When Asian Actress Ming Na Wen tweeted that Chris Rock should have brought up other minorities who have “worse odds’ at the Oscars, including Asians and Latinos, Black Twitter responded with a vast array of reasons (appropriately hashtagged #NotYourMule) why the two time Oscar hosts need not represent everybody.
“African Americans have been stereotyped as lazy ever since we stopped working for free. #NotYourMule,” one user tweeted suggesting that if all of these other racial groups wanted Chris to speak up for them, he ought to be paid for it. “Use your voice and speak out about the issues facing your own communities and don’t demand black people speak for you,” another user said. “As long as I’m being followed in the beauty supply store by your aunts and uncles, don’t ask me about my POC solidarity,” someone else added.
When will @chrisrock bring up Latino, Asian, Middle Eastern, Native American actors and opportunity? @emergingUS #OscarsSoWhite

The fact of the matter is other racial groups usually speak up for themselves, fight their own individual fights and usually do not make the issues black people face a priority or even a bullet point in their agenda. Take, for example, Afro Latinos having to fight for space between the pages of Latino publications.
Do you agree with the every man for himself mentality? Or do you think black people should speak up for everybody, even when no one else makes it a point to speak up for us?
1) "Colorblindness" enables institutional racism to persist.
2) This is part of why #NotYourMule exists. https://t.co/1czzLT6Vis— Derrick Clifton (@DerrickClifton) February 29, 2016
Given how many communities argued for political whiteness & embraced anti Blackness to buy into the American dream? Yeah #NotYourMule

You're silent about the lack of Afro Latinos in telenovelas, but want more Latinos on Empire, Scandal etc? #NotYourMule

Black people literally are labeled as *troublemakers* and are constantly expected to do footwork for anti-black communities. #NotYourMule

As long as I'm being followed in the beauty supply by your uncles & aunties, don't ask me about my PoC solidarity. #notyourmule

Solidarity doesn't look like Black people taking the risks & everyone else reaping the rewards. #NotYourMule
